Video: Scoping Mailbox Access on the Source Tenant

One way mailbox migrations can become complicated is when you’re asked to extract a subset of mailboxes while keeping the remaining ones in place and secure. Our new MigrationWiz how-to video, Scoping Mailbox Access on the Source Tenant, will show you how to accomplish this in a Microsoft project.

This video takes you through the steps on the Microsoft Entra admin center and shows you how to use PowerShell to place the right user mailboxes into the scope of your migration project. After completing the steps, you can proceed with your migration without disturbing the mailboxes that are not supposed to move.

What You’ll Learn in This Video

Most of the action during this tutorial happens outside the MigrationWiz console. Even so, there’s a detailed article on the BitTitan Help Center that takes you through the process. It includes:

Revoking ‘full access as app’ permission. In the Microsoft Entra admin center, you’ll copy the application ID and object ID to your notepad, then you go into the application permissions and revoke the ‘full access as app’ permission.

Create a mail-enabled security group. You’ll see how to create a mail-enabled security group to contain the users that you’re planning on moving. Then you’ll get the application permission to see those users.

Working in PowerShell. Next you’ll need to get the distinguished name for the group and add it to your notepad along with the commands for running the PowerShell script. The video, along with the Help Center article, includes specific instructions for customizing the commands for your project. Running the script will set up a new management scope and new service principle and assign the correct management role.

Test. To verify that you have the correct user mailboxes in scope – and that you’ve left out those you want to keep out of scope – you’ll learn an important testing step.

Once you’ve completed these steps, you’re ready to proceed with your migration using MigrationWiz. You can reference our mailbox migration video if you need a refresher for that part of the project.

Critical Post-Migration Step

To assure an efficient, secure migration, we include important post-migration steps in our how-to videos as well. In a migration where you’ve set up access to move a subset of user mailboxes, it’s best practice to remove the management role assignment, service principle, and management scope once the migration is complete.

Our video library keeps growing, so now you and your team can learn about specialized topics including Scoping Mailbox Access on the Source Tenant. Remember – every project type is also supported by a detailed Help Center article, but the video tutorials are a great way to learn from our migration expert.
